The BH-40 recently underwent a slight re-design. Here's what's changed:
Weight reduced from 13.0z to 11.9 oz (336g) (an 8.5% reduction).
Main lock knob raised and slightly shortened so it now clears any platform diameter (previously limited to 2.7" platforms)
Main lock knob has 26 available positions (up from 6)
Main lock mechanism is more robust and durable
Up to 45% stronger lockup – new load capacity is still 18lbs but lockup will be easier to achieve. This means that more force can get you more than 18lbs, but we still only recommend 70-200mm and occasional 300mm lens limits.
Drop notches have been reduced from 2 to 1, to improve the lockup stability and smoothness of the ball joint. The single notch is now centered at the “front" when in the usual ballhead position.
New laser-engraved indicators for both lock knobs to show which direction is which, tighten or loosen.
Drag set knob has an arrow indicator showing more drag or less.
A Really Right Stuff ballhead is the best choice for all general photography, and will give you fast and accurate control and solid support of your camera or lens. Aiming and horizon leveling can be accomplished as one instinctive motion, and rigid lockup takes just a quick twist of one control. As a result, our ballheads are faster to use and inherently more stable than 3-axis “pan-tilt" tripod heads. Since the ballhead profile is smaller and lacks the protruding handles, they are also much easier to carry and pack.
The BH-40 is the culmination of years of iterative development based on first-hand experience and abundant input from seasoned professionals and enthusiasts. Our goal was to build the perfect general-purpose ballhead. Our premise was that aesthetics needn’t play second fiddle to functionality, that operation should be intuitive and predictable, and that your investment should be rewarded with years of satisfaction.
The BH-40 offers up to 45 degrees of tilt in all directions, and up to 90-degrees in the drop-notch. Three knobs independently control the ball movement, ball friction, and an independent smooth-panning base with 2.5 degree increments.
The BH-40 LR II features our patented B2-AS II lever-release style quick-release clamp for optimum speed and security. The three positions of the lever offer fully closed, fully open and half-open positions for adjusting the plate within the clamp. When closed, the clamp offers 50lbs of no-slip grip on the plate and the lever hugs the clamp body, keeping it secure against accidental snags. The B2-AS II clamp also features laser-engraved reference marks.
Extensive field use has proven the utility of our innovative design. The BH-40 delivers solid performance in all weather and temperature ranges. Its low profile, precision control knobs, rugged housing, and state of the art quick-release clamps make our BH-40 the ballhead of choice for both seasoned professionals and enthusiastic amateurs.
A note about choosing the BH-40 LR II ballhead.
The clamp that comes installed on this ballhead is our full-size B2-AS-II clamp. This clamp is larger than the clamp that comes installed on the BH-40 LR ballhead. If the diameter of your tripod platform is larger than the base diameter of the ballhead (2.1"/53mm) you will experience clearance issues when using the drop notch; you will not have full use of the drop notch because the clamp will hit the tripod before reaching 90-degrees. The larger B2-AS-II clamp cannot freely clear wider platforms because the head itself has such a low profile. In most cases this is not an issue if you use L-plates, but we strongly urge you to choose the BH-40 LR ballhead instead of the BH-40 LR II ballhead if you use conventional body plates.
